Beyond Inflation Pressure: The Mechanical Issues That Tyres Often Reveal First

Image
Two particular elements of tyre checking are air pressure and tread depth. These are both crucial but seldom show the bigger picture. Every mile travelled leaves marks on the tyre surface. These marks often show more than normal wear. Changes in tread pattern, surface texture and contact with the road can reveal problems developing elsewhere in the vehicle, impacting performance before they get noticeably worse. Impact of Small Mechanical Changes on Contact Patch The portion of the tyres that always touches the road surface is called the contact patch. This portion is not only responsible for the grip on the road, but also helps with acceleration, steering and braking. So, a minor mechanical change can have a notable impact on performance because it affects the pressure distribution across the tread.  A suspension part losing efficiency may shift weight differently during cornering, or a steering joint may develop extra movement that may alter the tyre's angle against the road...
